Indiana leader of meth ring sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison
A Mexican citizen who Indiana prosecutors say ran the largest methamphetamine ring ever uncovered in Indiana was sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison.
Ramon J. Montero was among 24 people charged in late 2002 with taking part in the ring that moved more than $156 million in meth during a one-year period through an auto dealership on the west side of Indianapolis, Indiana.
Indiana Federal Judge Larry J. McKinney sentenced Montero on Tuesday to 19 years and seven months in prison and said Montero likely would be deported to Mexico when he was released from prison. Montero, 29, pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.
Another man charged with leading the ring, Cesar Anguiano, is now serving an eight-year sentence.
Indiana prosecutors said the drugs were made in Mexico, brought to California and then distributed in Indianapolis, Indiana. Some dealer sold the drug in Indiana, while others distributed it to other states.
"We have never seen this kind of weight and purity here," Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad Blackington said.
Indiana police officers seized 20 pounds of meth, with a reported street value of $1 million, during raids in Indianapolis, Indiana and Plainfield, Indiana. They also reported seizing 20 kilograms of cocaine, worth $2 million, more than 20 guns and $37,000 in cash.
Most of the others charged in the ring have pleaded guilty in plea agreements, while four suspects remain at large.
The Indiana judge could have sentenced Montero to as much as 24 years and five months in prison.
Defense attorney Steve Dillon said was Montero was a drug abuser and cannot read or speak English. Dillon argued for leniency for Montero because he was a first-time offender.
"He has expressed great remorse," Dillon said. "He never knew it would lead to all of this."
